Flowers play a major role in the process of reproduction or pollination. During pollination, the pollen grains are transferred or carried from the male parts or male gametes of the flower to the female parts or female gametes of the flower.

These pollen grains are normally tiny, powder-like in appearance. Carried by wind, water, or insects, they land on the sticky surface of the female gamete called the stigma. From the stigma they move down through the style to the ovules present in the ovary. Thus fertilization occurs and the fertilized ovule becomes the seed and the ovary grows into the fruit.
